This year, Youth Parliament is being held between 12th & 16th July 2010 at Parliament House, Adelaide. As in previous years participants will stay at a residential camp at Rostrevor College, Woodforde for the duration of the week.

Youth Parliament is managed by the YMCA of South Australia, and provides a unique forum for young people aged 16-25 to express their views, develop skills and learn about our parliamentary system.

Now in its 15th year, the program has educated more than 1,000 young people in the SA Parliamentary system, voting procedures, parliamentary etiquette, public speaking and bill writing in a professional and challenging environment. These young people have also had the chance to express their views and concerns in a safe and supportive environment.

These views are then developed into a Youth Parliament bill, with participants working in teams of up to eight people to craft their proposed legislation. Each team’s bill is debated during at least three full days in the chambers of Parliament House. Events during the week include an exciting recreation program, Opening and Closing ceremonies of Youth Parliament and a formal reception at Government House.

Youth Parliament 2010 will be a SACE accredited program. Participants may be eligible to gain two units in Integrated Learning by participating in the program and meeting several other requirements. Information will be provided regarding SACE accreditation at a later date.

The Youth Parliament program strives to maintain a low cost structure, making it accessible to as many young people as possible. The fee of $320 is inclusive of at least four nights’ accommodation, meals, comprehensive training, and a chance to shape the future. Young people from culturally and linguistically diverse, Indigenous and low socio-economic backgrounds along with people under the Guardianship of the Minister and rural and remote young people are encouraged to apply.
